Control surface stopped working.

My control surface worked yesterday. I turned on the TriCaster and today there are no lights on the CS. I then went and uninstalled the usb drivers, shut down and restarted. It now works. Is this common?

As long as we're using computers, yes. It wasn't a TriCaster issue, but I have seen many times (usually after OS updates) where I had to uninstall USB drivers and restart to get the system to re-install and recognize externals.

It is an occasional Windows thing (at least I believe it is). It happens once in a great while.

We have run into this before on our 8000 CS too. Most of the time, unplugging the power from the CS and plugging it back in seems to fix it

I've seen cases where simply connecting something to a different USB port caused it to be recognized again. I only mention this because it might be faster than working with the driver. There are days when I hate USB ...

I have recently had all sorts of little problems with my tricaster. Yesterday, my DDR would not playback audio despite it showing levels on the audio mixer. I tried everything physical- wires and whatnot- until my co-worker suggested rebooting. That worked.

I had to do a RESTORE on my Tricaster and now the Control surface does not work. Doesn't even light up! Is there a difference between TriCaster Basic and TriCaster Advanced?

Hi uplinkal,

Please help us a bit on which control panel, and which TriCaster you use, as it might have different troubleshooting steps.
The USB devices should connect automatically (if you have the correct FDTI drivers in the original image, and you should have them). The network connected ones (TC1LP, 2Stripe, 4Stripe, Flex, Flex Dual) either connect through NDI (Flex series), or use a serial over Ethernet implementation, and in the Add-on menu, you might have to search for them on the network. In that case, if your networking setup changed, like different subnet range for the TriCaster what the Panel had, or you had them connected directly to one of the NICs of the TriCaster, but the restore wiped the network setup for that specific NIC - which is normal -, then you have to figure out the networking setup for the panel itself, before you can configure it.

I am running a TriCaster 8000 with the Advanced Edition and Virtual Set Creator-2. the Control Surface is a TCXD-850, which I purchased separately and they worked fine together. The only problem i had was the joystick knob got broken off in transit but I could still move the joystick stem and it worked. I sent it to Computer Wise in Logan UT and they replaced the joystick and said they tested and calibrated it before shipping back to me.

When I powered up the TriCaster and plugged in the CS, every time I tried to use the joystick, the CS would lock up and I had to unplug and re-plug it for it to work.

I also have a second CS, model numbered TCXD855 and when I plug it in to the TriCaster it works fine, even if I use the joystick. No lock up or stalling. Both CS panels look identical except for the joystick. Computer Wise told me that the new joystick on the TCXD850 does NOT have a functioning button on the top of the knob like the original one had. He said it was no longer needed. (??). The TCXD855 still has the button.

When I look in Windows Device Manager, I can see the CS appear when I plug it in or watch it go away if I unplug it.

When I plug the network connection to my router, an IP addressed is assigned (DHCP as192.168.50.140) and I can ping it successfully. I can also see it on my router's list of clients. Does it need to be DHCP or can that be changed to STATIC? Does it matter? Also, the workgroup is assigned as WORKGROUP, while other PCs on my home network as set for MSHOME as the workgroup. Does that matter?

What else can I tell you about the system?

DHCP or static IP assignment can work for TriCaster. Which you should use depends on how your network is configured, but since you have a DHCP server, that is what I would use.

The workgroup name doesn't matter for TriCaster operation ('workgroup' is the Window's default). Windows lets systems in the same workgroup share files. If file sharing it important, then you would want to put all systems in the same workgroup.
